The Loner
Children The children are a little fearful of the boy and want nothing to do with him. They children find the boy strange as he is not energetic or as sociable as them. They gossip about him and never bother to interact with the lonely boy as his loneliness keeps them away. They do not wish to befriend him since they do not want to be the first to yield and surrender to make friends with him. They also seem to treat him unfairly as they would play with their friends but not him. They are curious about him and find him strange and but they “pass him running, skipping, walking, in slow huddled groups, low talking”, obviously gossiping about him. They also “pass him by and never speak”, showing that they have no such desire to speak or play with him. The children are also very stubborn on the matter of accepting the boy as “his loneness is his shell and shield and neither he nor we will yield” which also tells me that the boy’s loneliness prevents the children from playing with him and both sides do not want to be the first to give in and make friends. The children obviously are very fun-loving people but they treat the boy unfairly, leaving him to drown in his loneliness and boredom. They are bias and stubborn children too as they only choose to play with their familiar clique and not with the lonely outsider, the boy.
